The Teachers for a New Era project seeks to create and strengthen excellent teacher education programs at selected colleges and universities, with the goal of radically reforming teacher preparation.  AED works closely with the Carnegie Corporation and the grantee network, providing assistance to support project design and implementation at the participating postsecondary institutions.

The project’s goal is to improve teacher education by linking student learning data with the evaluation of teacher training programs; to engage arts and sciences faculty and k-12 practitioners in teacher preparation in meaningful and substantive ways; and to create two-year induction programs in which university faculty provide extended support for novice teachers.

Four initial sites have completed a year of intensive planning activities and also supported an external site evaluation, the key findings of which are being used to guide programmatic revisions.  The AED team is now assisting the seven new sites with proposal revisions, work plan development, and project start-up activities.
